SaaS Project Kit with Rails

from Zero to Hero by building 7 projects
made for Startup Founders, Solopreneurs, Marketers & Freelancers

Inspired Indie Hackers who turned their ideas into profitable startups with Ruby on Rails

Josh Pigford
  • . Josh is most famous as the founder of Baremetrics - an analytics solution for SaaS companies with recurring billing.
  • . He created a Ruby on Rails app connecting to Stripe APIs to analyse customers' transactions and tried to ship it soon to validate his idea.
  • . Less than 6 months, he made $14,000 MRR (monthly recurring revenue).
  • . In 2020, Josh sold Baremetrics for $4,000,000 in cash.

Jon Yongfook
  • . Jon quit his job to pursue a more entrepreneurial life in 2018. He decided to try and launch 12 startups in 12 months.
  • . And the #8 seemed to worked out and that was the BannerBear - a Ruby on Rails app that creates APIs for image / video generation and processing.
  • . As of now, this startup is making $48,000 MRR with 500+ subscribers.

Laura Roeder
  • . Laura was a digital marketer and she had a problem of posting different Tweets at different times to maximize exposure. She had to do this manually by hand, using spreadsheets and this process was time-consuming.
  • . That’s when Chris - Laura’s husban, who happened to be a Ruby on Rails developer - suggested that they build an app to automate the process. That’s how MeetEdgar was born.
  • . MeetEdgar generated more than $100,000 in MRR and was acquired recently for a 7-figure deal
Nathan Barry
  • . Nathan had an idea to build an email marketing tool built specifically for authors/bloggers like himself in 2013.
  • . That was where ConvertKit come from. To validate the idea, he hired a contractor to build the first version of ConvertKit as a Saas application in Ruby on Rails for the whole back-end and he himself worked on all the design and front-end code.
  • . It took him 10 months to reach $5,000 MRR. But now, after 9 years, it’s making $2.6M MRR.

Rails has done more for startups than a whole boatload of Venture Capitalists. Rails has had an incredible impact on the startup ecosystem.

Why is Ruby on Rails ideal for Startups?

📺 Ruby on Rails makes it easy and fun to build apps.

🧨 It is one of the best framework to prototype or build an MVP and ship faster so that it reduce the time-to-market of valuable products. It is the ideal for new startups which are looking for a startup friendly, cost-effective, flexible solution, especially for rapid application development.

🌎 Another super helpful thing is the flexibility and extensive open-source code libraries and projects (known as gems) in the Ruby community. This is a huge part that helps developers reduce the burden of coding everything from scratch.

This series is about YOU

This is why some of the top Fortune 500 companies such as Walmart, Target, and CNN use web scraping to stay ahead with data.

In this "Rapid API" project, you will learn how to build your own scraping tool (in a quick and easy way).

Even better, I'll show you how to transform it into a profitable API and sell it on the RapidAPI Hub for passive income. Yay!!!

All you need is just 2 hours for super fun time as we're going to build a simple game with Javascript.

Never create a game before? No worries at all. With the Kaboom.js library (a lovely Javascript library), I'll show you how to build this game easily in no time.

But it would be much cooler if we can make our game online as a Rails webapp and store the scores in the database. So your kids or friends can play from anywhere and compete your scores.
  • Quick tour for Kaboom.js library
  • Understanding layers, sprites
  • Building a Javascript game from empty file
  • Creating animation in the game
  • Creating infinite loop background
  • Handling different keyboard events
  • Managing game scenes (intro, playing, game over)
  • Creating a Rails web application as the back-end
  • Storing the game's scores in the database
  • Deploying game to cloud host service and share with friends

Tailwind CSS is a framework that provides a way to style your website right in the HTML itself without having to write external CSS.

On the other hand, using frameworks like Bootstrap makes your website look like every other website that uses one.

Tailwind provides a perfect solution to both the problems. It provides you with utility classes which provide a more granular level control over how your website looks like so that your website design stands apart from the rest.
  • Installing and configure the ideal environment for working with Tailwind CSS
  • Learning a modern way to style websites
  • How to use Tailwind utility classes to style Elements
  • How to use Tailwind classes to create Components
  • Building full responsive websites using breakpoints
  • Building a landing page for a SaaS app
  • Building the whole UI for a booking web application

Day 4

This is a real deal. We're going to build a web application that allows users to pay monthly subscription to join a Discord community.

You will learn how to build a Discord Bot to handle all business logic and pipe it with your own Discord server. Also this system is integrated with Stripe subscription payment.
  • Building a Discord community with subscription payment
  • Learn how to work with the Discord API
  • You will learn how to develop advanced Discord Bots

This project is about Rails API (back-end) and a mobile app (front-end) built with React Native.

This combination is really strong and fun, of course.

We're going to build a simple version of Realestate mobile app that allow users to list, browse, bookmark houses. Users can interact with the mobile app and all the data & transaction will be handled via Restful API to our Rails server.
  • Build your own Rails API for server back-end
  • Create different API endpoints for data
  • Authenticate user with OAuth API
  • Build real native mobile apps for iOS and Android with React Native
  • Diving deeper into Components, Layouts & Styling

A fun combination of Calendly and Zoom.

You will be building a Rails app for consultant services in which you can create different meeting slots with different prices. Your customer will select a available slot, pay for it and schedule a Zoom meeting with you.

In this application, we use Zoom API to embed the meeting right in our website which is super cool feature.
  • Building a full Rails web application
  • Scheduling meeting slots with price tag
  • Integrating Stripe checkout to pay for a meeting slot
  • Handling Stripe webhook events
  • User authentication with email and password

Welcome to the Web3 world!

Web3 has been changing the way that we view internet connectivity, web capability, and the overall abstraction of the user experience.

I decided to make a fun but real Web3 application that people can definitely bring it into their real life. The idea is a Buymeacoffee clone but with Ethereum (rather than $$$).

This specific one is just a beginning of my Web3 series that you will see in early next year (2023). But in the meantime, let's build it for real and enjoy!
  • Understanding the structure of a Web3 application
  • Design, test, and deploy secure Smart Contracts
  • Setting up both back-end and front-end in no time
  • Use the latest version of Ethereum development tools
  • Build the whole front-end UI with Tailwind CSS
  • Use MetaMask to pair wallets
  • Checking token balances and signing transactions
  • Deploy our own Smart contract with ease
  • Create your own Javascript snippet to embed on the other website to show "Buymeacoffee" badge with dynamic fund

Product-Oriented-Approach Benefits

In this brand new series, I will walk you through steps from design to develop different apps for different real busines idea with core functionalities from scratch.

You don't need to learn everything about Ruby, Rails, HTML, CSS, Javascript, or React Native to just create an application.

In my methodology which I called POA (Product-Oriented-Approach), you just need to learn what you need. This approach is far better than just boring theory of coding which leads you to nowhere.

Doing this way, it won't make you a superstar developer but will get you something REAL quickly and efficiently, especially for Entrepreneurs & Founders.
